lly dear Mounsey,

On the 10th January you sent us (under reference

F.38/38/87) copy of a despatch from the British Consul-

General at Bushire dated 1st December, 1926, in regard to

purchases of Persian Opium by the Governments of Singapore,

Sarawak, the Dutch East Indies and Siam, and the employment

of members of the Nemazee family for the transaction of the

business. On receiving your letter I wrote to Prince Charoon,

the Siamese Minister in Paris who represents the Siamese

Government on the Opium Advisory Committee of the League of

Nations, a private note of which I enclose a copy. Prince

Charoon communicated with his Government and has now sent

me a reply, of which I enclose an extract.

You will see that the Siamese Government would

like to have some official intimation of the Singapore

Nemazee's connection with the illicit traffic. Do you see

any objection to informing the Siamese Government, through

our Minister at Bangkok, that His Majesty's Government

have very good reason for thinking that all the branches of

the Nemazee family are connected with the opium traffic,

and that the Singapore Nemazee in particular was concerned

in an illicit attempt to smuggle opium into China through

Indo-China in 1922? (see Home Office letter of 10th August,

1923, enclosing cony of a letter from the Consul -General

at Saigon to the Government of Hong Kong). The information

could be communicated confidentially, if that were thought

desirable.

G. Mounsey, Esq., C.ll. G., O.B.E.,
